City of Ballarat has welcomed the announcement of bipartisan support for the Tullamarine Rail Link from Sunshine to the Airport.
Mayor of Ballarat Councillor Samantha McIntosh said the announcement, following the $5 billion commitment from the Federal Government, was fantastic for the whole state and especially Ballarat and the Western Region.
"An Airport Rail Link via Sunshine provides an opportunity for direct rail services for tourists to take advantage of all that Ballarat has to offer, including Sovereign Hill and other attractions.
"Not only that, it also opens the whole of the Grampians region to this international market.
"From an economic perspective the Ballarat CBD will be similarly accessible from Melbourne’s international airport as is Melbourne’s CBD, providing an opportunity for Ballarat to accommodate businesses that require access to our international airport links.
"City of Ballarat Council and our Central Highlands Council colleagues have advocated strongly for the airport link to be centred on the Sunshine Hub, along with Councils along the Ballarat Rail Link Action Committee including Brimbank, Melton, Moorabool, Ballarat, Pyrenees and Ararat.
"The bipartisan announcement provides a level of certainty for this infrastructure to be delivered in a timely manner, to ensure that investment decisions can now be brought forward, which is great for Ballarat."
