Have your say on recycling & waste

Dealing with waste is one of the biggest challenges faced by councils and communities across Australia – how to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle rather than burying our rubbish in landfill.

Council is currently seeking community feedback on a range of issues to inform the development of a new plan to improve Bayside’s recycling and reduce waste into the future.

Why rubbish matters

According to Bayside Mayor, Cr Laurence Evans, waste and its impact on the environment is an important issue for our community.

“Bayside sends more than 23,000 tonnes of garbage to landfill every year. Almost half of that is food waste which means that Bayside households are throwing away 14% more food than other Victorians."

"Not only does this mean households are throwing money away, ratepayers are also paying increased landfill costs via waste charges on rates notices."

”Food waste also has a significant environmental impact. Rotting food in landfill produces methane – a potent greenhouse gas, more damaging than CO,"

“We have set a target to reduce waste sent to landfill by 60% by 2020 and 75% by 2025. This is going to involve everyone in our community,” Cr Evans said.

We are asking for feedback and ideas on reducing and managing waste into the future. This will help us understand and consider the full range of views in the community for the development of a Recycling and Waste Management Strategy.

We are seeking feedback on issues such as:

How to reduce the amount of waste the Bayside community sends to landfill Including food waste in garden waste recycling Bin sizes Bin collection frequencies Encouraging more recycling of unwanted household goods rather than putting them out for hard waste.
