MEDIA RELEASE 24 July 2018
Council has called tenders for the construction of the Bathurst Rail Museum.
Mayor Cr Graeme Hanger OAM said calling for tenders marks a major milestone in the development of Bathurst’s newest museum.
“Council is seeking tenders from companies for the refurbishment of the former Railway Institute Building and the construction of two extensions which will house the Brewongle model rail layout and a dedicated children’s education area, along with associated site works, the construction of ancillary structures and landscaping.
“It has taken time to get to this point as we have had to work closely with a number of state government departments throughout the planning stage to get a design plan for the museum that was sympathetic to the Railway Institute and preserves the integrity of this state heritage listed building.
“Project architects Integrated Design Group have done a great job in both the design for the building and co-ordinating the approval process for the project. It is exciting to now be moving to this stage and calling for the construction tender.
“A lot of work is already underway with content for the Rail Museum being curated by Freeman Ryan Design and recent community stories day yielded new stories and content for the museum which will tell the social history of rail in Bathurst,” Cr Hanger said.
Tenders close on Tuesday 21 August and Council is scheduled to consider a report to select the successful tenderer at its meeting on Wednesday 19 September.
The renovation of the Railway Institute building and the construction of the two extensions is expected to take around 12 months, prior to the final interior fit out being undertaken. It is hoped the Museum will be open by December 2019.
