One of India’s most loved dance styles is set to spice up the performance stage at this year’s Bankstown Bites Food Festival.
Bankstown’s Bhangra Instyle dance school will be opening the festival on Saturday (28 July).
Owner and dance coach, Jaspreet Singh, said Bhangra is a vibrant and energetic dance form that originates from the Punjab region of northern India.
“This dance style emerged 500 years ago and is traditionally performed to celebrate the harvest season, and is accompanied by energetic singing and drums,” Mr Singh said.
“Our dances at this year’s Bites festival will be colourful, exciting and passionate.
“While some of our dancers are still very young and in the early stages of learning, I’m super proud of them for getting up and giving it a go – it’s going to be a great performance!”
The festival’s Spice It Up area, located in front of Bankstown Arts Centre, will also feature:
The sounds of Cuban rhythms;Cajun Zydeco;Reggae party band;Zumba sessions;Traditional Pacific Islander dance performances; andLive bands and singing acts.Mayor Khal Asfour expects attendance at this year’s festival to challenge the record of 10,000 people.
“Bites has always been a popular event on the foodies’ calendar and, if sales for the food tours is anything to go by, we should be in for a bumper crowd,” he said.
“Food is the best ingredient to bring our different cultures and nationalities together."
Other features of the festival, which will run from 10am-4pm along Olympic Parade, Bankstown, include 20 food tours, rides, activities and dozens of food stalls for the whole family to enjoy.
