Fremantle’s creative thinkers will have the chance to share their ideas with the world when the global public speaking phenomenon TEDx comes to Fremantle in September.
TEDxFremantle organizer Tara DePaolo is calling for potential speakers to submit their applications by Friday 19 July.
“TEDxFremantle provides a platform for local people to globally showcase their ideas and innovations to drive positive change,” Ms DePaolo said.
“We’re seeking applications from people whose ideas, innovations and insights intersect with Fremantle’s values of sustainability, diversity and social entrepreneurship.
“Whether you have a big philosophical blue-sky idea, a scientific discovery or a tech demo, if you’re a performer of music, dance, magic or an artist, or whether you have an idea, issue or experience you want to share with the audience - TEDxFremantle wants to hear from you.
“Don’t let TEDTalks 10 million YouTube subscribers put you off whipping together 400-500 words and a quick video for your chance to present at TEDxFremantle in September.”
Ten people from all walks of life will be chosen to speak for up to 18 minutes on their favourite topic around the theme of ‘Perception vs Reality’.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the City of Fremantle was delighted to be sponsoring the TED event.
“Fremantle has lots of passionate and creative people who think outside the box, push the boundaries and want to make positive contribution to our society,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“TEDxFremantle will give those people a chance to share their thoughts with a global audience and really put Fremantle’s ideas on the map.”
TED is a non-profit organisation devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks of 18 minutes or less.
It began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak, with their talks then made available for free at www.ted.com.
Previous TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, and Sir Richard Branson. TEDTalks are viewed 100 million times every month, or 1.2 billion times a year, by people throughout the world.
TEDx events are a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience, combining TED Talks videos with live speakers.
The Fremantle event will be on Sunday 16 September.
