THE future of Ipswich Motorsport Precinct has been assured after Ipswich City Council voted to continue with implementation of the precinct master plan.
Council voted in April 2018 to wind up Ipswich Motorsport Park Pty Ltd and move responsibility for the precinct under council’s Works, Parks and Recreation department.
City Management, Finance and Community Engagement committee chairperson Acting Mayor Wayne Wendt said council was firmly focussed on the future of the Willowbank facility.
“Much of the work already done adds great value to developing and exploring future options.
“We are still keen to go to market for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for a proposed driver training centre and expand the motorsport related activities especially off-road sports.
“The establishment of a commercially viable driver training centre would be critical in terms of attracting additional commercial activity across the site.
“Council is also interested in the potential of adjoining parcels of land to enable expansion of the precinct footprint.”
Cr Wendt said Motorcycling Queensland (MQ) had surrendered its 30 year lease in Paynes Road.
“It is proposed to move MQ’s motocross events to another part of the site where MQ will construct a temporary dirt track and other facilities.
“Other considerations for the precinct include on-site camping for major events such as the Winternationals and CMC Rocks.
“The 2014 master plan has also been updated to reflect a revised future layout of Queensland Raceway.
“Council will continue to be guided by the master plan which remains a key document detailing the general direction and growth of the precinct,” Cr Wendt said.
