The City of Swan has joined a collective group of 11 outer metropolitan local governments advocating for funding for better community sporting facilities.
The Growth Areas Perth and Peel (GAPP) group is seeking $350 million from the Federal Government for a special purpose fund for the construction of major outer metropolitan sporting facilities.
City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the City’s priority was to secure funding for a $50 million indoor leisure centre in Ellenbrook.
“There is a significant shortfall of indoor sport space across the Ellenbrook area; the nearest indoor leisure centre to Ellenbrook is over 16kms away,” he said.
“Our vision is to see an indoor aquatic recreation centre built in Ellenbrook to service the residents in Ellenbrook and surrounding areas.”
“The centre would consist of a minimum 25 metre lap pool, indoor multi-purpose ball courts and facilities for other service providers.
“It would address the increasing recreation needs of a booming local population which is expected to reach over 70,000 residents by 2036.
Mayor Lucas said the lack of sporting and recreation facilities in outer Perth metropolitan communities is a critical issue.
“Delivering on the sporting and recreation needs of our rapidly growing communities cannot be done without the help of the State and Federal governments,” he said.
“There is no dedicated fund for sporting and recreation facilities in WA; which means we are competing for funding against massive infrastructure projects both here in WA and in the Eastern States.
“We’ll now be working together with our partner councils to bring about a much-needed change and put our projects first.”
