Fairfield City Museum & Gallery needs volunteers

Fairfield City Museum & Gallery is looking to recruit volunteers from the local community to be part of its education program, Living the Past.

The program offers early primary school students the opportunity to learn about Fairfield in the early to mid-1900s through activities and a tour of our Vintage Village.

It’s a fun, unique, immersive and interactive journey into the past giving insight into life in the early 20th Century. Volunteers role-play the schoolmaster, shopkeeper, housewife and blacksmith to give children insight into life in the early 20th Century.

The program is delivered Tuesdays and Thursdays during school terms and is extremely popular by schools from all over Sydney. Volunteers typically work for four hours per shift.

In recent years, Fairfield City Museum & Gallery’s volunteer numbers have declined and more volunteers are needed to ensure the ongoing success of the program.

Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said celebrating our past and passing on our City’s heritage to the younger generations from all over Sydney is critical.

“The Fairfield City Museum & Gallery is a cultural icon of our community and a wonderful connection to our past,” Mayor Carbone said.

“It is crucial that learning about our City’s heritage is accessible and as exciting as possible for our young people, so that they can appreciate the past and how far we have come as a society.”

“Volunteering is fun, social and rewarding. It’s a great way to get out and meet people while doing something positive for the community. I encourage locals to think about giving up some of their day to volunteer for the Fairfield City Museum and Gallery.”

If you have an interest in history and enjoy working in a small team and with children, we would love to hear from you. The role would be particularly suited to retired teachers, people studying or those with a passion for early Australian history. We are looking for people who can commit to one day a week (four hours) for at least a year if possible. Blacksmithing skills are highly sought after. A working with children check is required and training will be provided.
