Crossing busy Church Street has been made easier with the installation of new raised zebra crossings at the Male Street roundabout.
The zebra crossings will help to improve safety by slowing vehicle speeds at this intersection, making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians, providing pedestrians with priority over vehicles and improving access for pedestrians, particularly those with mobility impairments.
Local resident Wayne Styles, who uses a mobility scooter, said the new raised road surface has made a huge difference to his journey in and out of Church Street.
“It’s great to see Council implementing changes that will help to improve access for pedestrians, particularly those with mobility impairments,” he said.
In the last five years, two accidents have occurred at this site and improving safety is a high priority for Council.
These upgrades are part of Council’s investment to improve pedestrian priority on key walking routes and was jointly funded through the State government’s Safe Travel in Local Streets Program.
The Council Plan 2017-2021 prioritises walking and cycling as the preferred modes of transport for short trips in Bayside. The four remaining roundabouts in the Church and Bay Street Major Activity Centres will also see raised zebra crossings being installed by 2019/20.
Council would like to thank the local Church Street traders for their patience and support during the works.
