When I grow up, I want to be an artist
Ballarat (City) 30 Jul 2018

The community art collective SHEILAS – Strong, Honest, Exceptional and Inspirational Lady Artists – comes to Backspace Gallery from 26 July – 12 August, bringing work by a range of women artists drawn from the spectrum of art practice and experience.

Encouraging and supporting all women in the process of art-making, the group show When I Grow Up examines the journeys of women of all ages exploring the ideals of freedom and equality.

Featuring 35 artists, When I Grow Up is a multidisciplinary celebration of women’s creativity in photography, sculpture, tapestry, weaving, printmaking, and digital art.

But while this exhibition has a specific gender focus, it is more importantly a showcase for how the creation of art encourages people of all identities to push their boundaries, seek self-expression, and pursue excellence in practice.

Backspace Gallery is an initiative of the City of Ballarat dedicated to supporting local and regional artists by exhibiting quality contemporary visual art, design and craft.

Backspace Gallery is free to the public, and open Thursday – Sunday, 12 -4pm.
