The City of Swan is one step closer to facilitating a new era of aged care for its community.
The City has finalised its contract of sale with Southern Cross Care WA for the development of an aged care precinct in Paradise Quays, Ballajura.
City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the City is eager to see the staged development move forward after many years of planning.
“Encouraging the private sector to invest and construct aged care facilities in the City of Swan is a key priority for us. We’ve spent several years facilitating these developments and it’s nice to see them come to fruition,” he said.
“Tenders were received for this development in 2017 and the successful tenderer, Southern Cross Care WA, has now completed its period of due diligence and executed the contract of sale with the City.
“This marks an exciting milestone which allows us to progress into the next stage of the development.”
The City of Swan faces a serious shortage of aged care facilities. By 2036, the City will need 918 extra aged care beds and 1,300 more retirement village units.
The proposed precinct will provide up to 245 dwellings and different levels of care, including more than 120 residential aged care units, 70 independent living units and 34 dementia care rooms.
It would also include a public piazza, community lounge facilities and recreational amenities, and connection to the local environment.
Whiteman Ward Councillor Maria Haynes said the provision of local aged care is a welcome addition for the City of Swan community.
“Local aged care facilities are essential to allow senior residents to age in a familiar place while maintaining connections to their families and social circles,” she said.
“It’s great to know that there will be an option available in Ballajura for community members who are looking to move into a local, supportive aged care village.
“After many years of planning, all three Whiteman Ward Councillors – Cr McNamara, Cr Kovalevs and I – are united in our support for this project for our community.”
