CHILDREN aged between five and 11 years can sign up for the Little Lifesavers program at Orion Lagoon this summer.
Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) ran a pilot program at Orion Lagoon last summer. A follow-up survey indicated strong support for the program to continue.
Works, Parks and Sport Committee deputy chairperson Cr David Morrison said council was approached by SLSQ to run Little Lifesavers again this coming summer.
“It allows young children to gain vital skills without having to travel to a surf beach or join a surf lifesaving club.
“Children are introduced to board paddling, wading, dolphin diving, obstacle courses, flags, rescue techniques, patient care and CPR.
“While last season was a first in Ipswich, the program has been running since 1993 and SLSQ provides qualified and highly skilled staff.”
Cr Morrison said the program duration was 10 hours over five sessions.
“Three program dates have been confirmed. The first kicks off on October 1.
“SLSQ provides highly qualified staff and equipment to provide children with the opportunity to learn vital lifesaving skills.”
