A report into residential aged care in the Snowy Monaro has been presented to Council with key recommendations put forward to further the ongoing delivery of quality services and facilities in the evolving sector.
The Residential Aged Care Report has recommended Council expand its involvement in the provision of residential aged care services.
The report supported calls for a residential aged care facility to be established in Jindabyne, and the need for a purpose-designed facility catering for residents with ‘severe and challenging behaviours’ to be co-located at Yallambee Lodge, Cooma.
At last night’s Ordinary Council Meeting in Cooma, Councillors resolved to: A. Approve implementation of the operational observations made for Yallambee Lodge, Cooma. B. Approve implementation of the operational observations made for Snowy River Hostel, Berridale. C. Approve the preferred option to expand residential aged care services and progress with implementation of the stated 14 recommendations.
Through a Mayoral Minute, Council also resolved to: - That Council release the Executive Summary of the report, ‘Review of Council Owned Residential Aged Care Services in the Snowy Monaro region’.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor John Rooney said the report provides a clear framework for the ongoing delivery of quality residential aged care services in the region.
“This is an excellent and detailed report. It has given us plenty to think about, and we are committed to delivering the recommendations provided,” Mayor John Rooney said.
“The Jindabyne community will be pleased to learn the report supports their calls for establishing a residential aged care facility in town, while a dementia until is proposed for Yallambee Lodge.”
As a result of this review, Council has applied for 16 additional beds in Cooma, and an allocation of 40 beds in Jindabyne as part of the current Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR). Council will work with the Jindabyne community to identify suitable land and develop a grant application for capital funding for the new facility.
Hundreds of responses were received from Snowy Monaro residents who participated in the residential aged care review, through surveys and at public meetings.
During the community engagement process, the review heard: •The community has a keen interest in the provision of residential aged care across the region. •The community believes there is a significant deficit in the quantum and nature of existing facilities. •While the community does not expect Council to solve the problem, they do want Council to provide leadership in finding a sustainable solution. •The community wants to be part of the solution.
