Works to demolish a building in Echuca’s port precinct and construct a 65 metre retaining wall adjacent to the historic wharf and Murray River have now started.
Campaspe Shire Council Mayor Cr Adrian Weston said it’s full steam ahead as works proceed to dismantle the former Oscar W building.
“The 31 year old building, not listed on the heritage register, is being demolished to make way for works to replace a 65 metre section of retaining wall, directly behind the area which destabilised after floods of mid-2016,” Cr Weston said.
“The site includes a small section of an old retaining wall which is listed on the State Heritage Register and any works at the site must ensure this is retained and protected.”
Following advice of an unsuccessful funding application through the National Disaster Assistance Fund, the project has been funded as part of council’s 2018/19 Budget.
Works are expected to be finished by early next year.
The future of the prominent site will be the subject of discussion with the community forming part of the conversation.
