Shire advocating for drought relief Tuesday 21 August

East Gippsland Shire Council has welcomed Federal financial assistance for the region’s drought-affected farmers and will seek state assistance in a meeting with the Victorian Agriculture Minister this week.

East Gippsland and Wellington shires were the two Victorian councils listed as eligible to receive up to $1 million each to deliver projects to stimulate drought-affected communities.

Shire Chief Executive Officer Gary Gaffney said Council had commenced work on identifying projects that would have an impact.

“We have commenced on identifying potential projects that would meet the criteria that is being developed,” Mr Gaffney said.

“The Federal assistance is greatly welcomed in response to the advocacy that we have undertaken with our Member for Gippsland Darren Chester.”

Mr Gaffney and the Mayor Cr Joe Rettino will meet with the Victorian Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford at Parliament House on Wednesday to discuss what support can be provided by the Victorian Government for East Gippsland farmers and communities impacted by the drought.

Cr Rettino said that council had in place a farm rate reduction and urged anyone experiencing payment difficulties to make contact as soon as possible.

“Applications for assistance are considered on a case-by-case basis and alternative payment arrangements may be offered. The sooner you contact us, the sooner we can help you,” Cr Rettino concluded.
