On Monday, I joined Deputy Premier John Barilaro and Council’s Tourism and Events Manager Donna Smith, to officially unveil the Brumby sculptures at the entry to the Snowy Monaro region.

The sculptures are located adjacent to the regional entry sign on the NSW/ACT border and it’s exciting to see these impressive sculptures on display. They showcase the very talented Tobias Bennett who won the Snowy Monaro Environment Award at the 2017 Lake Light Sculpture event.

It was a busy day on Monday with the Deputy Premier announcing $500,000 to upgrade the multi-function centre in Cooma. This facility is one of the region’s premier function spaces and the funding will go towards upgrading the kitchen and installing large double doors.

The multi-function centre is regularly used to host large events, sporting presentations, and the Cooma Show each year. I would like to thank the Deputy Premier for this investment into our region.

Last Thursday, Councillors met for the second Ordinary Council Meeting in August. The much anticipated Residential Aged Care Report came before Council. It sets out a framework for Council to expand our provision of residential aged care services throughout the region.

The report recommended Council supports the establishment of a residential aged care facility in Jindabyne and a purpose-built facility for residents with severe and challenging behaviours to be co-located at Yallambee Lodge, Cooma.

Council has already applied for 16-additional beds at Yallambee Lodge and an allocation of 40-beds in Jindabyne through the Aged Care Approvals Round. We look forward to working with the Jindabyne community to see this come to fruition.

I would like to thank the community for their participation throughout the residential aged care review. A further community report will be presented in September.

Time is running out to apply for the Boco Rock Community Enhancement Fund. Applications must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 24 August. Funding is available to community groups in the former Bombala and Cooma-Monaro Shires. This is a great opportunity for your community group to turn a project into a reality.
