Proposed Memorial

Published on 22 August 2018

In response to a request from the Australian Indian Historical Society the Council has approved in principle a proposal to erect a memorial to honour Mr Siva Singh.

It is understood that Mr Singh was a long term resident of Baddaginnie and owned several properties in Benalla. He was a well-known travelling hawker providing goods and servicing the rural area in the early part of the twentieth century. His memory is held in high regard in the Sikh community in Australia.

The memorial as proposed is to be of natural rock from the area and recessed into the embankment in the vicinity of Fawckner Drive, Benalla on the foreshore of Lake Benalla. The face of the rock is to have two brass plaques as depicted in the image as a link below.

The cost of the memorial will be the responsibility of the Australian Indian Historial Society Incorporated.

Submissions relating to the proposal will be received up until Tuesday 4 September 2018 and can be forwarded to the Council by email to [email protected] or posted to PO Box 227, Benalla, Vic, 3671.
