Monster Mash Trash Playing Cards for Primary School Children

Bellingen Shire Council with support from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority and as part of the Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, has produced a set of playing cards with a range of messages to encourage primary school aged children to think about reusing, recycling and ‘mashing trash’.

The cards are called ‘Monsters Mash Trash’ and can be used to play popular card games including Snap, Go Fish, Old Monster (Old Maid) and Memory Game. They feature bright and colourful monster characters which have been created by Dee Texidor and graphically designed by Anna Fisher.  

The cards have been designed to engage children in a fun game that teaches them how to waste less and recycle more with the ultimate goal of changing behaviour and attitudes around recycling.

Bellingen Shire Council are distributing packs of cards, which were collated by participants in a New Horizons program, to all primary school children in our Shire and also making them available in the classrooms as a teaching resource for learning activities.

Council officers visited Urunga Public School earlier this week to speak with students and staff about this new initiative.  The students loved the cards and are keen to become involved in the ‘Waste Less, Recycle More’ movement.

Bellingen Mayor Cr Dominic King said “This great resource has been produced by Council working in partnership with local designers with funding provided by the NSW EPA Better Waste and Recycling Fund. It will educate our next generation and help improve recycling, promote community engagement, reduce waste generation and tackle litter and illegal dumping”.
