HomeNews Articles2018August 2018 Young Drivers Expo - helping young drivers beat the oddsAccording to Transport for NSW, young drivers represent almost a quarter of annual road fatalities, despite making up only 15% of all licence holders.
With this in mind, Tamworth Regional Council, NSW Police Service, NSW Ambulance Service, Department of Education and Training, Hunter New England Area Health, and Roads and Maritime Service, have come together to create the annual Young Drivers Expo. An event designed to educate young drivers across the region about safe driving, drugs, alcohol and risk taking behaviours.
Over the past 21 years, the Tamworth Young Drivers Expo has provided road safety awareness to youth from North West NSW and as Tamworth Regional Council Manager Country Music and Events, Mr Barry Harley explains “We’re pleased that the event attracts a strong show of support from schools, both locally and outside the region.
“Research shows that the first month of driving with P-plates is the riskiest time, so the Expo is a timely reminder for young drivers that their actions can have serious consequences.”
The Expo which is targeted at year 11 students aged between 16 and 17 years who are in the process of getting their Learner or Provisional Licence, includes a range of interactive workshops by NSW Police, NRMA Insurance, Roads and Maritime Services and Hunter New England Health as well as a live stopping distance and cornering demonstration and crash scene role play.
“Along with educating young drivers the expo also challenges young drivers’ attitudes about beliefs about driving by delivering some serious messages that will hopefully help them to beat the odds when they get behind the wheel,” Tamworth Regional Council Event Coordinator Erin Carroll said.
Over 1,200 students from schools in Tamworth, Manilla, Barraba, Armidale, Gunnedah, Qurindi, Scone, Tenterfield, and Walcha will attend the event across the week.
The Expo kicks off at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre on Tuesday, 28 August 2018 and concludes Friday, 31 August 2018.
