Construction works on Prospect Hill Road

Changes are afoot at the old Masonic Temple on the corner of Station Street and Prospect Hill Road, Camberwell, with the site slated for the construction of eight aged care residences.

This is not a Council project but it will impact our community, primarily in terms of disruption to traffic.

What you need to know

Disruptions to traffic and pedestrian movement are expected along Prospect Hill Road and Station Street and at the Station Street carpark entry. Increased construction-related traffic may also be experienced along Burke Road. 

To help keep disruptions to a minimum, the following measures are planned:

accredited traffic controllers will be in the area to help keep vehicles moving as much as possible clearly marked signage will be displayed in the approach to the affected area alerting motorists to the changed conditions Local Laws officers will be patrolling the area to ensure parking restrictions are adhered to. Motorists who usually drive along Prospect Road or enter the Station Street carpark near the construction site are advised to find a detour if possible, thereby avoiding inevitable traffic delays. 

Consider using public transport: Camberwell is well serviced by trams, buses and trains, and easily navigable on foot once there. 

Background

The project received planning permission from VCAT after initially being turned down by the City of Boroondara.

The construction company managing the project, LU Simon Builders, has assured us they will take every step possible to protect the amenity of our residents, traders and visitors during the works, which are expected to take approximately 18 months.

Remedial and preparation work is currently underway, with activity set to increase by the end of this week. Once the site is established, demolition will start. Heritage overlay control dictates that only the southern part of the existing building can be demolished.
