‘Barkly Regional Deal’ still on the table

Council Mayor Steve Edgington is looking forward to progress the ‘Barkly Regional Deal’ under the new Scott Morrison led Federal Government.

The Mayor said there has been some speculation about the progression of the ‘Barkly Regional Deal’ which is understandable following recent changes to Cabinet in Canberra.

“As far as our Council is concerned, the Federal Government has agreed to pursue a ‘Barkly Regional Deal’ in partnership with the Territory Government and the Barkly Regional Council,” said the Mayor.

“The Chief Minister of the Northern Territory has already provided a strong commitment to the ‘Deal’ and there is no reason that I’m aware of to suggest it will not be going ahead.

“Looking at the new Morrison Ministry I note that the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack has responsibility for Regional Development with support from Assistant Minister Sussan Ley.”

The Mayor said the Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion, is one of the Barkly region’s biggest supporters.

“The Senator has already assured me that the ‘Barkly Regional Deal’ remains a priority for the Federal Government, and I have no doubt he is fighting in our corner to ensure the deal goes ahead as soon as possible,” said the Mayor.

“This Regional Deal is a once in a generation opportunity and so it is absolutely critical that we get this deal right.

“That means we aren’t going to rush to failure but we will work constructively and carefully with all levels of government to ensure the Barkly is the best place in the Territory to live, work, visit and invest in.”
