Council recommends Traffic Solutions for Lapstone Sports Precinct

Blue Mountains City Council has completed a review of traffic conditions in Lapstone’s Explorers Road and Governors Drive precinct which identified a number of improvements to address traffic flow, parking arrangements and traffic congestion in the area.

While some improvements can be made in the short term, the majority of the recommendations require further design, resident consultation and referral to Council’s Local Traffic Committee.

Ward 4 Councillor and Mayor, Cr Mark Greenhill, said, “I welcome this review and the approach taken to address community concerns with the level of traffic congestion and the impact on local residents of cars parking along Governor’s Drive and Explorer’s Rd in Lapstone.”

The review monitored traffic conditions in six key sections of road in the area which included the busy sports precinct during the peak winter sports season. The review considered crash data, bus routes, school zones, resident observations, existing signage and parking arrangements, and a series of inspections at various days and times of the week.

Fellow ward 4 Councillor, Brendan Christie, said, “We’ve been working hard over the past six years to make improve safety on Lapstone roads and ease congestion especially from weekend sport. As a Lapstone resident myself, I’ve seen first-hand too many near misses and over-crowding. These improvements will stop people blocking driveways, footpaths and bus stops and overall improve safety in Lapstone.”

The review recommended, among other things:

The development of a Parking Precinct Plan for the Lapstone sporting area is also recommended to provide more accessible public parking facilities, improve parking equity and manage the increasing demand for parking. This process would involve community consultation and development of detailed designs for on and off street parking in this busy sporting precinct.

The Mayor said, “I appreciate the collective efforts of ward 4 councillors, Council staff residents and sports club representatives, to address the community concerns with road safety in this area. This review is a step in the right direction.”
