Work began last week to extend the Metung Boardwalk to the corner of Rosherville Road.
The $1,015,000 East Gippsland Shire Council project will improve safety for pedestrians along Metung Road, from Chinaman’s Creek to the town centre.
The current boardwalk, from the town centre to Riviera Nautic will be extended by 325 metres. An old timber retaining wall will also be replaced with steel piles and concrete panels.
Mayor Cr Joe Rettino said the boardwalk extension was a high priority for residents.
“This project was identified as one of the three highest priorities for the community in the Metung Nungurner Community Plan, which was developed after extensive community consultation,” Cr Rettino said.
The works will require alterations to utilities in the area and jetty connections, particularly at the south end of the extension.
The project was slightly delayed while seeking approval to remove native vegetation. With the permit in place works were able to begin.
The main vegetation removal was undertaken last week near Riviera Nautic.
“This vegetation removal was required so the failing retaining wall can be replaced. We are completing this work now to avoid the peak season when there is more traffic.
“The rest of the boardwalk will be installed with only very minor vegetation removal and trimming, which is also approved under the planning permit,” Cr Rettino said.
Council will also offset the vegetation removed, as required under the permit.
The current works require partial closure of the southbound lane of Metung Road and a pedestrian detour.
The project is funded by council and the Victorian Government and is expected to be completed by mid-December 2018.
