Visitors to Fremantle are being encouraged to stay longer with the introduction of second hour free parking in three City of Fremantle car parks.
Under the new arrangement, people who park at the Parry Street and Point Street outdoor car parks and the new Cappuccino Strip car park on South Terrace and pay for one hour will get a second hour for free.
Previously the Parry Street and Point Street outdoor car park offered the first hour of parking for free, while the Cappuccino Strip car park had only four 30 minute free parking bays for visitors to the City of Fremantle administration office.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the change would support local businesses by encouraging people to spend more time in the city centre.
“The ‘first hour free’ parking we’ve previously had actually encouraged people to spend less time in Freo because they’d rush around trying to get everything done and back to their cars in less than an hour,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“With second hour free parking people will be able to do whatever they need to do in town, and then have more time to relax and have a coffee or grab some lunch.
“This way we are encouraging people to stay longer and still get their hour of free parking.”
With around 5000 parking bays available in the city centre, Mayor Pettitt said the City of Fremantle offered a range of parking options to suit all situations.
“For those people who just want to make a quick pit-stop we have 30 minute free parking in High Street and Adelaide Street, as well as the four 30 minute free parking bays in the Cappuccino Strip car park,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“We also have one hour free parking in the area surrounding Kings Square to support local traders during construction on the Kings Square Renewal project.
“For people planning to be in town for a few hours we have more than 1000 on-street parking bays, as well as around 2300 bays in the 28 off-street car parks managed by the City.
“And for those looking to park all day we have cheaper long-term parking options on the fringes of the city centre like the Beach Street, Point Street, Ellen Street and Parry Street car parks.”
Fremantle residents can also apply for a residents parking permit which allows them to park for free in on-street parking bays from 3pm until 11am, seven days a week.
The Queensgate car park is on track to be reopened before summer as part of the Kings Square Renewal project.
