The City of Swan welcomes the McGowan Government announcement today identifying Bellevue as the preferred location for a major new Metronet railcar facility.
The proposed manufacturing facility will be located minutes away from the historic Midland Railway Workshops precinct, which serviced Western Australia’s rail system for nearly a century.
City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said the announcement was a nod to the region’s extensive rail history.
“This announcement marks the return of rail production to Midland, an area with nearly a century of industrial railway history,” he said.
“The Midland Railway Workshops ran for nearly 100 years and were vital to the development and maintenance of the state’s rail system.
“Now we are seeing the beginning of a new era for the industry, with the promise of a purpose built facility just one kilometre away from the historic workshops precinct.
“It is exciting to see such a significant investment in our local community and a new connection to one of the biggest infrastructure projects in Western Australian history.”
Mayor Lucas said along with the new Midland train station and extension to Bellevue, this facility will further enhance and develop Midland’s growth.
“This facility will bring jobs and opportunities for our local community, and help enhance Midland as a key strategic metropolitan centre for WA,” he said.
“Our vision for Midland and surrounds is to attract investment and business and see the region thrive for generations to come.
“There is so much happening in the area right now – it is truly an exciting and transformational time for our community.”
