Works to upgrade and extend the North-South Bikeway continue as the separated route has reached Rundle Street.
It is now possible to take a relaxed ride from Unley to the East End along quiet streets, shared paths in our Park Lands and a new, safe and separated bikeway.
The bikeway now also features a bike counter, launched by the Lord Mayor today, which displays daily and annual data on the counter in real time.
Lord Mayor Martin Haese said the new bikeway has made a significant improvement to the safety and amenity of the area, with high quality finishes and greening key features of the final design.
“This is a great outcome for cyclists, pedestrians, motorists, local businesses and residents,” said the Lord Mayor.
“Continuous community engagement has been essential to the success of this project and I want to thank the local community for their contribution and feedback throughout the process.
“I also want to again thank the State Government for partnering with us on this record investment in safe cycling infrastructure in the City of Adelaide.” Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Local Government Stephan Knoll said that the North-South Bikeway would help keep cyclists safe and improve traffic flow in the CBD.
“The State Government is proud to partner with the Adelaide City Council on initiatives, like the NorthSouth Bikeway, which improve the safety and accessibility of our CBD,” said Minister Knoll.
“If we can make it safer and easier for South Australians to ride their bike through the CBD, we’ll encourage more people to cycle to work which will help ease traffic congestion.”
John Culshaw, Chairman of the Culshaw Group and owner of the Majestic Hotel on Frome Street, said the bikeway additions and improvements would enhance the city.
“Council management, staff and the contractor have done a magnificent job in minimising disruption to our guests while work has been underway,” said Mr Culshaw.
“We have appreciated the communication during the recent works and take a long-term view that the bikeway is quality civic design that will enhance the city.”
The four street blocks between Rundle Street and Wakefield Street operate with two lanes of traffic in each direction during peak times, with off-peak parking. Peak times are 7:00-9:00am and 4:00-6:00pm.
The two street blocks between Wakefield Street and Carrington Street remain as one traffic lane in each direction at all times with full time on-street parking.
The bikeway will continue north along the final Frome Street block between Rundle Street and North Terrace once the adjacent private development (Adelaidean) construction is completed.
Connections for the CBD section of the Bikeway with North Adelaide and Prospect are currently being considered ahead of further community engagement, to provide a safe, continuous North-South link through the City of Adelaide.
The City of Adelaide has partnered with the State Government to transform the city experience for bike riders with the largest single investment in cycling infrastructure in the city’s history.
