Council has closed beaches north of Green Point on the advice of the EPA.

Water runoff from firefighting operations to contain a large fire in Melbourne’s west this week is expected to impact water quality in Port Phillip Bay over the weekend.

It is predicted that impacts may extend to beaches as far south as Brighton.

The EPA is warning the public to avoid swimming and fishing, and not let pets drink or swim in the water.

EPA has collected water samples for chemical analysis but this requires 1-2 days to complete.

Further beach closures may occur over the weekend. Please follow the advice on signs at beaches.
