Bush tucker community gardens, murals by young people, play spaces, comfortable seating and shade – these are just a few of the attractive features for a new look Dapto Square.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery AM will join representatives of Dapto Chamber of Commerce, Dapto Rotary Club, Dapto Futures Group, Dapto Mall and students from Dapto High School to launch the revitalised Dapto Square on Thursday 9 August.

Dapto Square now features a new play space, two community gardens planted with bush tucker plants, new seating, shade and a wall of murals created by young Dapto community members.

“This is a great outcome for Dapto Square,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said. “What better way than to help create a place where people can sit, socialise and enjoy time while visiting Dapto town centre. Children will love the new play space while parents and carers can relax in the revitalised Square.”

The Dapto Square project was supported by Dapto Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Dapto, Dapto Leagues Club, and Dapto Mall. The local branch of ANZ also supported the project, providing the wall to feature murals from young artists.

Endeavour Energy and Greening Australia were able to help students from Dapto High School plant bush tucker and bush medicine plants in two gardens.

“We had a morning where students from Dapto High School rolled up their sleeves and helped to plant bush tucker and bush medicine plants from Greening Australia.

“The new Dapto Square was a vision from our Dapto residents following community consultation for the Dapto Town Centre Plan. Community members wanted to see Dapto Town Centre as a unique and welcoming place, pedestrian friendly, attractive and vibrant. The Dapto Square project is one part of the Town Centre Plan. This will be a start to the ongoing implementation of the Dapto Town Plan. This will be a start to the ongoing implementation of the Dapto Town Plan.”
