Wollongong City Council is seeking your ideas and comments on a draft Masterplan for our award winning Botanic Garden.
The Wollongong Botanic Garden, which also includes Gleniffer Brae Manor House and Sorensen Garden, was officially opened in 1971. This draft Masterplan will help to identify long term improvements and guide enhancements for the Botanic Garden over the next 20 years. The draft plan is now on public exhibition on Council’s website so all community members can provide their ideas and comments.
The main aims of the draft Masterplan are to maintain and enhance horticulture and plant conservation, environmental education, recreation and the heritage of the site as well as the Botanic Garden’s role as a much loved community space.
The key proposals in the draft Plan include:
A major new public entry to the site from Northfields Avenue, incorporating a remodelled operational and administration area to enrich the visitor arrival and orientation experience New Café and toilet facility near the Duck Pond Café restaurant in a refurbished Cratloe Cottage (with the relocation of the Discovery Centre education service) Options for increased parking and vehicular circulation along the Paulsgrove Street boundary Upgraded entry at Murphy’s Avenue carpark Refurbishment of Sir Joseph Banks Glasshouse as a 50-year anniversary project in 2021 Completion of Stages 2 and 3 of the Rainforest Walk (Stage 1 was completed 2018) Gleniffer Brae Functions and parking upgrade.You can view information the proposed draft Masterplan on our website
Council will also hold an onsite information session at the Garden on 18 August between 10am and 12 noon, near the Duck Pond, to provide further information.
Submission on the draft Masterplan will close at 5pm on 3 September.
