Neerim Junction Incident Statement

Myself, Mayor Joe Gauci and Council officers have been at the Neerim Junction Community Hall today speaking with media, different support agencies and community members.

Some media reports have suggested the dog was seized by Council, however this is not the case, the dog was voluntarily surrendered by the owners.

We can confirm the dog has been humanely euthanised as per the owners request.

Our focus remains on supporting Victoria Police and the Coroner with their investigations, as well as supporting the local community.

Representatives from Council and support agencies will remain onsite at the Neerim Junction Community Hall for any community members that require support following this morning's tragic incident. Tea, coffee and refreshments are available and representatives will be in attendance until 5.00pm.

Firstly and most importantly, Council expresses our sincere condolences to the family that have tragically lost their child as a result of a dog attack earlier this morning. Our thoughts are with the family and the tight-knit Neerim Junction community during this difficult time.

We can confirm that the dog has been secured and is now at the Municipal Animal Pound.

This is now a Coronial matter and Council awaits further instructions from Victoria Police regarding the future management of the dog. Our understanding is that the dog is a Pointer breed, which is not a restricted breed under the relevant legislation.

Council is focused on supporting Victoria Police and the Coroner to ensure they have all the required information for their investigation.

At the same time, the Neerim Junction community is also a priority for Council and we are engaging relevant support agencies to assist the community. More information will be available shortly.
