Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller is encouraging local businesses and residents to support the homeless by coming to ‘Nite Under the Stars’ at the Whitlam Leisure Centre on Friday 10 August 2018.

This special event will feature free activities for the kids run by the West Tigers, face painting, henna tattooing, hot food and drinks, and an optional sleep-out under the stars. Profits from the event will be donated to support people doing it tough in the Liverpool and Fairfield areas.

“Homelessness is a major issue across Sydney, with an increasing number of people struggling with rent,” said Mayor Wendy Waller.

“According to the 2016 census over 3,500 people experienced homelessness in Liverpool and   Fairfield alone; many of those are elderly women, or young women with children, who are particularly vulnerable.

“I would like to see local residents come along and make a donation on the night. You can experience what it’s like to sleep rough for yourself or sponsor a work colleague, friend or relative to sleep out. You can also make one-off online donations, which are tax deductible.

“Liverpool City Council takes an active role in facilitating solutions to homelessness by working in collaboration with specialist homelessness services, but we can always do more.

“I would like to say how proud I am of all the partner agencies from Liverpool and Fairfield that do so much to support marginalised and disadvantaged people in our area.”

Mayor Waller thanked all organisations involved in this project, including Liverpool Women’s Resource Centre, Bonnie Support Service, Fairfield City Council, Department of Human Services, Belgravia Leisure, St Vincent de Paul Society, NSW Family and Community Services, Anglicare, Mission Australia, South West Sydney Women’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Service, Liverpool Community Kitchen and Hub and Community 2168 Project.
