Eat Your Heart Out Liverpool won’t just fill your stomach – it will feed your soul.

On 25 August, 2pm-9pm, Railway Street in Liverpool CBD will combine amazing food, live music and performances, markets, Garden Games and art into a feast for the senses.

Festival producer Vi Girgis has commissioned several artists to produce sculptures and murals to give Eat Your Heart Out its own quirky identity.

“Sydney artist Melissa Carey will build a giant heart sculpture arching over Railway Street,” Ms Girgis said. “It will be the proud centre-piece of our colourful festival, this year and in the years to come.”

Ms Carey’s work has been shown internationally and often involves large sculptural installations.

“This work is called Open Heart, and it was inspired by the title of the festival, but my artwork is always a representation of what’s going on in my own life,” Ms Carey said.

“It’s about being open and honest, having integrity and authenticity. It’s going to be an immersive experience for people to be part of.”

Festival goers can get snap-happy in front of a a colourful mural by contemporary Australian painter Julia Townsend and a community mural created by Muralisto in partnership with Settlement Services International.

Zoe Edema from Muralisto said the mural was about multiculturalism and diversity.

“Muralisto is dedicated to using public art as a vehicle for social change,” she said.

“We do this with youth-focused art mentorships. Working with groups of young people, we start by discussing social issues and incorporate them into the plan for the mural, then they work with our mentors to paint them.”

Eat Your Heart Out Liverpool will serve as the launch of new work by artists-in-residence Thomas Thorby-Lister and Stephanie Peters, who have been based at Studio 52 in Scott Street and Northumberland Arcade respectively.
