Grant to trial food waste diversion

After a competitive application process, the City was announced as one of 17 recipients of funding from the Waste Authority's Community and Industry Engagement program.
City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the City would implement a two-month FOGO (food organics and garden organics) trial with the funding.
“We are very excited about the FOGO trial which will allow selected households to include food scraps in their kerbside green waste bins,” Mr Sharpe said.
“Up to half of what goes in our general waste is food scraps so there is potential to save a lot from landfill and turn it into compost instead.”
The trial would test the potential of rolling out a city-wide kerbside FOGO system.
“The funding will also allow us to conduct a behavioural research project to find the best ways to help residents reduce waste and recycle correctly,” Mr Sharpe said.
The FOGO trial is expected to commence in October and selected households will be contacted later this month.
