Local writers and performers will be given two minutes to wow a live audience (their judges) with original poetry, hip hop, monologues or stories during a one-off national poetry slam heat at Brighton Town Hall on Saturday, August 18.
The Australian Poetry Slam is a live literary performance competition involving a nationwide round of 50 heats. The competition began in 2005 and has since grown into an internationally renowned poetry slam event.
Two finalists from Bayside’s Poetry slam heat will compete in their state final, and the winner and runner-up from each state will compete at the national final at the Sydney Opera House in October.
The ultimate prize is an international tour worth $10,000 in 2019, when the Australian Poetry Slam Champion performs at Byron Writers’ Festival, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, Singapore Writers Festival and Hong Kong International Literary Festival. They will also be published by Pitt Street Poetry, and receive a residency in the NSW Southern Highlands with Bundanon Trust.
Catch the raw and witty, vulnerable and downright gritty voices of Bayside’s best wordsmiths, live.
Registration opens at 1.30pm, for a 2.00pm start, at the Brighton Town Hall. With the first 15 people to register guaranteed a performance spot at the heat.
