National Science Week series to showcase change makers

Verge gardening, the future of residential energy and food security are the topics of a free National Science Week workshop series in the City of Swan this August.

Change makers: Climate Science and Adaptation will present participants with ideas about how to thrive in Perth’s changing climate.

City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said a series of three diverse workshops would be held across the City.

“The series allows residents in the City to come together to develop creative solutions to problems, whether it be gardening in a drying climate or promoting urban biodiversity,” he said.

On August 11, Dr Ian Foster from the Department of Primary Industries will discuss the Western Australia’s climate change, future predictions and the ways our agricultural and water sectors are responding to these changes.

On August 18, Paula Hansen from the Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute will describe how our centralised, fossil fuel dependent electricity network is undergoing a rapid transformation.

Local permaculture expert Stacey Smithers will also speak on August 18, introducing an abundance of edible weeds growing locally as well as other wild edibles such as insects.

Pearce Ward Councillor Cate McCullough said the series demonstrated the City’s commitment to supporting science and sustainable living.

“We are proud to support science and present this series in partnership with Switch Your Thinking and the Serpentine Jarrahdale Food and Farm Alliance.”

Change Makers: Climate Science and Adaptation is presented as part of National Science Week 2018, which received grant funding from the Australian Government.
