Green waste collected by East Gippsland Shire Council will be mulched by Green Care Mulching after the company was awarded a contract at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Council’s green waste service includes kerbside collection to eligible households and public drop off at some of its waste facilities.
The green waste is mulched, creating a useful product for landfill site rehabilitation and making it easier to transport.
Council’s Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said council’s internal mulch requirements have reduced.
“Council has been using mulched green waste to rehabilitate landfills.
"There are projects in the pipeline at Mallacoota, Orbost and Bairnsdale waste sites that will use most of the mulch generated this year,” Ms Weigall said.
“A major piece of work, rehabilitating the closed landfill at Bosworth Road, Bairnsdale, is now almost complete so we will not need the same volume of mulch in future years.
“We have deliberately built flexibility into this contract to accommodate the varying internal requirements for mulch,” Ms Weigall said.
The three-year contract awarded to Green Care Mulching is for $560,000 per annum in the first year for mulching services only.
The contract has an option of two 12-month extensions.
