Next step to replace seawalls begins Monday

East Gippsland Shire Council’s project to replace the seawalls along the Esplanade in Lakes Entrance will ramp up next week with works to install the concrete panels beginning.
Council, along with other agencies, has some responsibility for the sections of the town’s foreshore.
A contract was awarded in April and work began on site soon after with test pile driving. The next step in the replacement project, manufacturing the concrete panels, took place offsite.
This task is now progressed to the stage where residents will see work taking place along the Esplanade from Monday, August 13.
The works will require the closure of the Bank Jetty car park from Monday, August 27 for the duration of the project.
The seawall along the Esplanade stretches 216 metres and will be replaced with precast concrete panels as it is close to the navigable marine harbor and Coast Guard precinct.
The project includes a boardwalk to connect to the existing walkway.
An audit and geotechnical investigations of the bluestone seawalls along Cunninghame Arm and Bullock Island led to council fencing off a 90-metre section of footpath above the seawall for safety. This area is near the Coast Guard building on the Esplanade.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-December this year.
The Victorian Government is contributing $1.3 million to the project under its Coastal Protection Infrastructure Upgrade Program, with council contributing $452,000.
