Despite the winter chill and bursting riverbanks, more than 5,000 people turned out to Lilac Hill Park in Caversham to celebrate the City of Swan and Perth Airport’s Avon Descent Festival.
While conditions on the river saw the water levels reach record-breaking heights, crowds on the foreshore enjoyed the supersized program of family fun.
City of Swan Mayor David Lucas said it was great so see such a fantastic turnout despite the conditions on the day.
“This is the second year the City has held its Avon Descent community festivities at Lilac Hill Park, and this year’s event was another great success,” he said.
“The event had wonderful community atmosphere with people cheering on the competitors from the river’s edge.
Swan Valley/Gidgegannup Ward Councillor Charlie Zannino said the day was packed full of fun activities to keep the whole family entertained.
“It was great to see such a full program of entertainment for the community - which included on stage performances, markets, art, a cracking food truck line up, free children’s fair rides and inflatables, and much more,” he said.
“The Movida Fun Zone was packed with a high ropes course, hot rodz mini cars, teacup rides, bumper cars and mini golf – while Midland Gate Main Stage saw acts from The Lulus, Junkadelic, Zap Circus and Duncan Saige.
“The City is proud to host the iconic Avon Descent as it travels through our region, and we look forward to enjoying this event in years to come.”
The event was supported by Perth Airport, Movida Estate, Lotterywest, Midland Gate and the Vintage Collective Markets.
