Bellingen, Dorrigo and Urunga Library staff demonstrated their new DAISY Player during Local Government Week activities.
A DAISY Player or Digital Accessible Information System plays talking books and music that have been recorded on SD card or compact disc (CD) or MP3 CD.
It is designed to be a complete audio substitute for print material and is specifically designed for use by people with ‘print disabilities’, including blindness, impaired vision, and dyslexia. The devices will improve accessibility of Library information as identified in Council’s adopted Disability Access & Inclusion Plan.
The player has a built-in English voice guide that helps the user get started; variable play speed with pitch compensation for extra clarity; page jump and time jump functions and a sleep timer. Compact discs can be heard either through an internal speaker or with headphones.
The DAISY Player will be a borrowable item with a request already being made by a library member who will use the player while in hospital.
