Black Rock Primary School students are taking the lead in building a sustainable future for Bayside by joining the Tomorrow’s Leaders for Sustainability program.
The school received Council support for its Year Six students to take part in the program, which develops leaders through understanding and implementing sustainability principles and practices.
Bayside Mayor Laurence Evans presented participating students with a certificate recently to mark their completion of the program.
“These students are now leaders in protecting our local indigenous plants and animals, and keeping Bayside’s beaches and foreshore clean,” Cr Evans said.
During the program, students introduced composting, made plasticfree lunch wraps, and visited the Black Rock foreshore to see the impacts of rubbish.
Teacher, Jacqueline Hutchinson, said sustainable practices were now a priority. “We see a genuine cultural change towards caring about the environment and being more sustainable,” she said.
Council has supported the program in schools since 2014, and will continue to develop young leaders to ensure Bayside has a sustainable future.
