Council uses steam rather than chemicals to weed in or near playgrounds, kindergartens and childcare centres in Bayside.
We have not used Roundup, or products that contain glyphosate in or near playgrounds or childcare centres since 2016. All weeds in these areas are treated using steam.
During 2017/2018 Council spent over $130,000 on weed steam control and has allocated over $140,000 in 2018/19.
Council contractors sometimes use products containing glyphosate or “Roundup” for the control of annual and perennial weed species in garden beds.
Spraying is conducted according to regulations set by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. This includes using targeted, best practice methods only when weather and wind conditions are favourable.
