Works will soon begin to deliver the transformation of Oval 2 at Elsternwick Park, which will be renamed in honour of legends in local community sport.
Elsternwick Park Oval 2 will undergo a $3.3 million upgrade with the installation of cricket nets, lighting, improvements to the playing surface and a new pavilion.
Bayside Mayor, Councillor Laurence Evans, said the upgrades represented Council’s commitment to providing community sporting infrastructure for the future.
“The existing Oval 2 and pavilion are ranked as the highest priority for renewal within Bayside and form part of the plan to improve sporting facilities at all Bayside sportsgrounds by 2025. These upgrades will allow for more flexible game schedules to maximise participation across all ages, skill levels and genders.
“With its modern, environmentally sensitive design, the new pavilion will symbolise all that is fantastic about Bayside and our active and very involved community.”
Council collaborated on the vision for the oval with the Elsternwick Cricket Club and the Elsternwick Amateur Football Club who have been joint tenants for more than 110 years.
In honour of two equally significant and respected clubmen, Council supported the renaming of the oval following the joint submission from both clubs. Elsternwick Park Oval 2 will now be known as the Holmes-Todd Oval, for the late Barry Todd from the Elsternwick Cricket Club and the late Graham Holmes from the Elsternwick Amateur Football Club.
Elsternwick Amateur Football Club President, Mike Convrey, said the upgrades will make a major difference for the club.
“We can’t wait, it’s been 30 years since our pavilion was built so you can imagine how outdated it is.
“The new pavilion will finally give our club, and the cricket club, a social room with a space for people to mingle that looks out over the ground, it will have male and female changing facilities, first aid facilities, adequate storage facilities and a canteen area – basically everything we don’t have now.”
The lighting will be installed from August and improvements to the playing surface will commence in early November 2019, while the pavilion is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.
