Regal Theatre Management

The City of Burnside will continue to have operational responsibility for the management of the Regal Theatre; a heritage-listed and Council-owned venue on the Kensington Road precinct.

This decision of Council represents a new chapter for the iconic and much loved attraction; allowing for strengthened community partnerships and interaction and acting as a further enabler towards Council’s strategic direction and vision

General Manager, Urban and Community, Barry Cant, said that the Council, aside from continuing regular movie screenings, has plans to expand the community use of the site.

“We want to explore opportunities to expand the community use of the theatre to include live theatre, music, community and family events, with increased private/group/charitable hire,” Mr Cant says. “With these changes the theatre will be a multi-purpose facility delivering more benefits for the community and residents.”

“Such opportunities provide a medium for fostering community participation, appreciation and involvement to bring together individuals in our communities who might not otherwise have had a chance to do so,” Mr Cant says.

Council will now develop a Conservation Management Plan to restore and refurbish the theatre and to position it not only as a theatre, but a multi-use venue of choice. Options to improve community outdoor space are also envisioned.

The Administration will negotiate tenancy arrangements with existing tenants to ensure business continuity, and work in partnership on future lease arrangements.

“I am pleased that we are able to enhance our portfolio of recreational and cultural facilities and offerings to the public, with the Regal providing for a ‘sense of place’ and a socially connected community, “ Mr Cant says.

It is believed that the Regal will be the only Council-owned and operated movie theatre in Adelaide.

This decision reaffirms the City of Burnside’s commitment to ensuring that the heritage-listed and Council-owned Regal Theatre continues operating for the enjoyment of the local and wider community.
