Campaspe Shire Council will again join VicHealth this October in its mission to encourage children and families to get active by taking part in the foundation’s annual Walk to School program.
Mayor Cr Adrian Weston said the program encourages families to get active and walk, ride or even scoot to and from school.
“The program is a free, easy and fun way for kids to get active and learn healthy habits for life,” Cr Weston said.
Council will work with local primary schools to deliver activities encouraging more families to be physically active this October thanks to funding of $10,000 from VicHealth.
“We have15 schools participating in this great initiative and we encourage more primary schools to get involved this year to make Walk to School bigger and better,” Cr Weston said.
To support the program, council will run competitions for participating schools, support walk events, speak with local primary schools and develop safe walking routes with schools.
“Council is delighted to support Walk to School in Campaspe Shire to encourage more children to be more energetic while commuting to and from school,” Cr Weston said.
Ms Jerril Rechter, VicHealth CEO said each year the Walk to School program continues to grow with more and more schools taking part with fantastic results.
“Last year more than 140,000 kids from over 750 schools across Victoria took part in Walk to School and walked the equivalent of two return trips to the moon.”
“Helping our kids to get active is so important for their health and wellbeing – which is why it’s great to have the support of Campaspe Shire Council to get more local kids walking, riding or scooting to school,” Ms Rechter said.
