Bayside City Council, in conjunction with CityWide Open Space, are inviting residents and visitors to shake off some of those Winter cobwebs and come along to Bayside’s Heathland Sanctuaries for a true Spring experience.

Both Gramatan Avenue Heathland Sanctuary, Beaumaris and Bay Road Heathland Sanctuary, Sandringham will be hosting Open Days from 2 – 4pm every Sunday throughout Spring, giving locals and visitors the opportunity to experience and learn about Bayside’s unique flora. Gramatan Avenue HS will be open from the 9/9/18 until the 30/9/18.  Bay Road Heathland Sanctuary will be open from the 9/9/18 until 28/10/18.

Some of the City's other Heathland reserves that will be offering guided tours are: Balcombe Park Reserve, Beaumaris will be open on 23/9/18, 10am to 12pm and Long Hollow Heathland Sanctuary, Beaumaris, will be open on 23/9/18 1pm to 3pm.

Our heathlands are filled with many colourful and vibrant wildflowers, many of which once covered a vast majority of the Bayside area.  This is the perfect time to take a Sunday stroll through a natural heathland environment.

These Heathland Sanctuaries represent some of the most diverse remnants of the Sandringham Heath Flora, the plant community once covering much of Bayside.  The Spring Open Days will be the perfect time to come and see them at their best, with many species of heath, orchids and lilies flowering.

The Open Days are coordinated by the Bushland Crew of CityWide Open Space and will be staffed by volunteers from local environmental groups. These volunteers have sound knowledge about the precious local plant communities and will be available to lead tours of the reserves.
