Ballarat City Council will consider a proposal to name a new Alfredton Grove Estate park after the Aboriginal word for grow.
The recommendation to name the area Karingga Park will be considered at the 12 September Ordinary Council Meeting.
The park will be developed as part of a new estate, with the developers requesting to give it a local Indigenous name.
Consultation has occurred with the Traditional Owners of the Land through the Registered Aboriginal Party, with the Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation rules stipulating the RAP be consulted when considering the use of an Aboriginal name.
Ballarat City Council supports the use of Aboriginal names where possible and this action is also consistent with the council’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
Consultation on the name took place between 16 July and 13 August but no submissions were received.
If adopted, council will forward the proposal to the Office of Geographic Names for auditing and final approval.
The name will then be gazetted and added to the Victorian Registry of Names and mapping database.
