Tamworth Regional Councillors tonight recognised the aviation industry’s importance to the local economy with the creation of an industry group to develop and oversee a strategy to guide the sector’s future development.

Councillors supported a report which recommended a Tamworth Regional Aviation Strategic Development Committee be formed.

The report said the initial focus of the new committee will be pilot and aviation technician training and the ongoing development of Tamworth Regional Airport to accommodate international air freight.

All Councillors will be members of the committee which will have the authority to draw on industry specialists when needed.

Tamworth Region Mayor Col Murray said a strong aviation industry has a key role to play in ensuring the Region has a strong economy with ongoing jobs growth into the future.

“We have previously acknowledged the exciting opportunities to build on existing local aviation businesses and training organisations and also to attract new business to the Tamworth Regional Airport Precinct,” he said.

“The airport is a fully owned and operated Council asset which is experiencing considerable growth – it really is a case of the sky’s the limit when it comes to its economic and strategic importance in our region’s future prosperity.”
