Boardwalk gets new lease on life

One of Canterbury-Bankstown’s most scenic walkways is getting a makeover!

More than 300 metres of timber boardwalk at Picnic Point’s Lambeth Reserve is being replaced with a more durable and environmentally stable alternative.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the existing boardwalk had reached its use-by date, having weathered numerous king tides, particularly in recent years.

“This boardwalk is used by thousands of residents and visitors every year, and weaves its way through a variety of natural environments, such as mangrove forests, river and creek foreshores, landscaped parklands and bushland areas,” he said.

“So, we’re going to give it a new lease on life, by replacing the old timber with a grate made of Fibre Reinforced Polymer.

“Unlike traditional timber, this material won’t rust or rot. It is also low maintenance, termite proof, light weight and will be more eco-friendly in the long-term.

“In addition to replacing the timber, we will be widening the boardwalk and upgrading the existing viewing platforms.

“We want Lambeth Reserve to remain one of the most beautiful and scenic walkways along the Georges River foreshore.”

The new boardwalk will follow the existing footprint and will be completed before the end of the year. It is one of 29 park and sporting field improvements, valued at Council will be undertaking in 2018-19.
