Free registrations for desexed cats

Want to register your cat for free? Then why not take advantage of Council’s new offer of free first-year registration for desexed cats.

Council’s Manager Community Safety, Anne-Louise Lindner encouraged everyone to be responsible pet owners and ensure their cats were desexed, microchipped, and registered with Council.

“Council impound statistics show an increasing number of unwanted cats coming into the pound system, mostly undesexed and unidentified.

“If your pet gets lost, our officers have a much better chance of returning it to you if it’s registered”.

Last year Council impounded 248 cats and only 13 per cent were registered and able to be returned to owners.

Ms Lindner said this number is too low and it was hoped enabling free registration would help Council to ensure more cats were able to be returned to their owners.

“This initiative is part of Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan”, said Ms Lindner.

“We really want people to desex their cats so that we reduce the number of unwanted litters in our shire.

“Offering free first-year registration for desexed cats is one way of providing an incentive for people to do that”, she said.

“Through this program, we are hoping to reduce the number of unwanted cats in our community, reduce impacts on wildlife and reduce some of the nuisance issues caused by cats such as roaming, urine marking, and aggression”.
