The Pilbara Regional Biosecurity Group Inc. (Pilbara RBG) advises residents and travellers that during September 2018 a community aerial and ground baiting program (using 1080 meat baits) to control wild dogs will be carried out by pastoralists and the Department of Parks and Wildlife (Parks and Wildlife) on pastoral leases and Parks and Wildlife managed land across the Local Government areas of Ashburton, East Pilbara, Town of Port Hedland, Karratha and Broome.
Additional intermittent ground baiting of pastoral leases, Parks and Wildlife managed land and Unallocated Crown Land may also be carried out at any time throughout the year in these areas. Please treat all indicated land as containing toxic baits year round. Take care when working within, or visiting these areas.
Domestic pets should be kept close and under control at all times. All roads in this region pass through pastoral leases or Parks and Wildlife managed land. Please keep domestic pets on-leash and close to the road to avoid the poison meat baits. It is unlawful for domestic pets to run free on Parks and Wildlife managed land.
1080 baiting is an integral part of the wild dog pest management program. Pastoralists undertake these poisoning programs to protect livestock from death and injury caused by wild dogs. Parks and Wildlife participate in this work as part of it’s Good Neighbour Policy. Unfortunately, there is no antidote for 1080 if poisoning of domestic pets does occur.
